My top 5 favorite Twitter clients for Linux
I have been using Linux for quite a while now and have been searching to find a great all round twitter client. After spending a few days trying out a few I thought I would share my experiences with them. One of the things I will say for all of these applications is how well they have kept with the ‘simplicity is best’ style of the twitter website, something I personally feel is a quite important element.
What ever you’re looking for in a twitter client you should be able to find it in the following list. Also if you think I have missed any or have a recommendation please feel free to let me know via a comment.
1. Tweetdeck
Tweetdeck is my all round favorite of the list and is currently the number one twitter client used. As far as simplicity goes tweet deck is an all round winner, it’s simple navigation and customizable panel system means you can work with multiple accounts or just the one very easily . If you’re looking for a client that you can use with other networks look no further currently Tweetdeck works with Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn so keeping in contact with everyone has never been easier. You will have to download and install Adobe Air to use Tweetdeck but that is a simple 2 minute process. For a full list of features click here.
2. Twhirl
Twhirl comes in at a close second to Tweetdeck, not because I like it any less, in fact I like it just as much. The one thing that I feel it lacks is the ability to view multiple timelines at once. Other than that Twhirl is perfect, great looking, fast, feature packed and very simple to use. Some of you might already know that Seesmic another widely used twitter client recently purchased Twhirl, I have still not been able to get seesmic to run without issues in Linux though. Twhirl can be used with many other social networking sites and definitely deserves a download. Check out the twhirl website here.
3. SPAZ
Another client built on the Adobe Air framework is SPAZ. Again with user friendly interface and simple design SPAZ is great to use. One of the things I like most about it is you can style this client yourself using CSS. All round this client is fun, simple and has a lot of personality. To read more about it check out the spaz site here.
4. Twitux
Twitux is a twitter client built for the GNOME desktop environment. It is one of the more simple Linux clients but does it’s job very well. Although it lacks some features you get with twitter.com or other clients, it is still is a great little application and definitely worth a look. Check out the twitux website here.
5. gtwitter
Gtwitter is a GTK+ based twitter client with GUI based on the mac client Twitterrific. Again much like Twitux this client covers the basics but is missing a few features. However gtwitter is still under development and have plans to include new features such as direct messaging and history saving. All in all a nice little client, it is lightweight, simplistic and fast. For more information check out gtwitter site here.
So that about sums it up, I hope you find some of the above helpful.
