From Insomniac to Uberman – The plan.

Something I have been suffering from for a long time is insomnia. No matter how many times I have tried to beat it I have given up completely or quickly returned to my sleepless ways. After visiting the optician today because of my constantly bloodshot eyes, which are due to dehydration, I have decided I really need to sort out my sleeping. In comes the Uberman sleep schedule or Polyphasic sleep as it is widely known, this is method I have chosen and hopefully I will get some results. Here is a little bit of info on the Uberman sleep schedule from http://polyphasicsleep.info.

The Uberman Sleep Schedule (AKA “Uberman’s sleep schedule” [1][2]) is a polyphasic sleep schedule that consists of six naps of about 20 minutes each (possibly as little as 15 minutes after sufficient adaptation, and possible as much as 30 minutes, depending on the individual). These six naps are spaced evenly throughout the day — i.e., about every four hours. For this reason, the schedule has also been called equihexaphasic.

The term “Uberman” was coined by Puredoxyk and first appeared on the Web in her post to everything2.com. PureDoxyK reports having pursued this schedule with a partner, after which she recruited a group of friends into the practice. However, it’s unclear whether they called it “Uberman” at the time (1998-99) or whether she came up with the term afterward; the everything2 post was made in December 2000, well after full-time work had forced her to end the practice.

My initial thought was to start right away, but I think I will allow myself some preparation time. This will with any luck allow me to get tired enough to actually sleep for the short periods required. I guess this is going to be the thing that really tests me in a few days when although physically exhausted I will be wide awake, this I feel is a make or break.

If nothing else this will be a test of will power and an interesting experiment, I am unsure whether it will work for me but we will soon see. If it works or fails I do not really mind, I have feeling this is going to be a fun thing to jump into regardless.

So tomorrow morning around the time everyone has left for work I will try to get my first 30 mins of sleep and see how things pan out from there. Updates coming soon…

Just remembered I am going out over the weekend. Going to start on Monday.
